How I Overcame Imposter Syndrome and Got Booked on a Huge Podcast That Attracted Hundreds of My Ideal Clients!

In the summer of 2017, I was preparing for an interview on a “big” podcast — and I was freaking out! I thought I was in way over my head because after I got accepted, I did more research on the show and saw all the big names, HUGE names, that had been previous guests.

Who was I, a nobody from nowhere, thinking I deserved to be interviewed? What if I stumbled over my words and sounded like an idiot?

“I’m not ready. I’m not good enough.” was on repeat in my head.

I had a nervous stomach for days and was close to emailing the host back and canceling, or postponing.

But I also really wanted to share my message. I wanted to be known and grow my business. I wanted to use my voice for good in the world.

I continued reminding myself that the host agreed and invited me, so clearly she thought I was good enough to be “allowed” on her podcast. I leaned into the British wisdom: Keep calm and carry on.

The day of the interview came, and I was still so nervous! Happily it was audio only, no video, so the host couldn’t see my facial expressions as I tried so hard not to say ‘um’ or laugh nervously at the end of my sentences.

Afterward, I felt a million times lighter. I’d done it! My sense of accomplishment was massive, and I felt really good about how it went.

Once released, HUNDREDS of women “discovered” me through that one interview: joining my Facebook group, my email list, becoming clients. Years later people still say “I heard you on the XX podcast”

There’s no doubt that speaking and being interviewed is a fantastic way to grow your business and attract clients.

Do you have a desire to share your message, but hold yourself back?

🌟Here’s 3 tips to overcome your Imposter Syndrome:🌟

1- CLAIM YOUR EXPERTISE

Own your genius! That thing you are uber passionate about and could talk on and on for hours? The golden result you love helping your clients achieve? THAT’s the topic you want to be interviewed on. The one thing I WASN’T nervous about with the podcast interview was my subject, and that helped my confidence immeasurably. If you’re unclear or feel uneasy about what your expertise is, ask yourself instead: What do I want to be known for?

2- GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION

As women, many of us are conditioned to wait our turns to speak, and to defer to others for opinions. Heal any place in you that believes you must be the absolute guru in something before you’re worthy to teach/ guide/ coach. When it comes to your business, you cannot wait for opportunities and invitations. You must give yourself permission to show up and speak up!

3- LEAP BEFORE YOU’RE READY

If I’d waited until I felt ready before pitching myself to that podcast in 2017, I probably would still be waiting! And I wouldn’t have received all the benefits that were a result over the last 5+ years. I overcame my imposter syndrome BECAUSE I was invited to that “big” interview, not before I applied. The biggest growth and healing happens in the real life initiations. Reach for that big dream now.
